About Poola/Volunteers Association.

POOLA/VOLUNTEERS ASSOCIATION has been involved in the assistance to the poor people, since its constitution in the year 1994.

The Association is dedicated to a Somali lady who spent her life in the protection of the people in need, especially children and women. She was named `Poola' - which means 'pure':

POOLA is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 in TURIN by the Somali Diaspora in Italy. POOLA works with others to find lasting solutions for poverty and suffering in Somalia and in particular South Somalia. In addition POOLA also acts as a bridge between local communities and international donor organizations. POOLA also mobilizes Diaspora to engage in the development of their country of origin.

Since 1994 POOLA has gone through a process of professionalization and became one of the leading migrant organizations working on development issues in the Somalia. Considering the desire to further professionalize POOLA, to obtain structural funding from funding agencies, as well as from the constituency and to make the development work of POOLA efficient and effective, it was considered appropriate to look back and reflect on what clear directions POOLA should take to remain a leading Diaspora relief organization and a reliable development partner. This was done in 2008 and resulted in a Strategic Plan for the period 2009 - 2011. Meanwhile, ongoing professionalization of the organization, diversification of funding and better visibility of the organization through communication and development of a clear profile have been partially realised.

In 2000, there was an opportunity to become part of an alliance lead by G.V.V. which opened the door to structural funding of a part of our program in Somalia on education and women empowerment. POOLA embraced this opportunity, which required a further clarification of it's future aims and, accordingly growth of the organization, which had to be assessed to be able to participate in this alliance as an equal partner.

This strategic plan for the period 2011 - 2015 is an update on the previous one, considering the mentioned changes in perspective. Like our previous strategic plan, it has been developed through an orientation process in which the POOLA board and volunteers were intensively involved.

We also want to seize this opportunity to thank every individual and organization that inspired us in our development work in Somalia POOLA Board.
